Chapter Seven
WILL WASN’T sure he’d heard right. He slid his hand over the receiver’s mouthpiece so his mother wouldn’t hear his discussion with Steve. “You want to do what?”
“I’ll be your date. Just for Sunday.” Steve shrugged, looking a little paler than usual and clearly shocked at his own words. “No strings attached until we see how we get along, of course, but it sounds to me as if your mother needs to see with her own eyes what it means that you’re gay.”
“Are you sure about this?” Will wasn’t certain he liked the “no strings attached” part of Steve’s offer, finding himself increasingly attracted to the man. But now was not the time to discuss it. His mother was waiting, and she wasn’t known for her patience. “You do realize that we haven’t dated long enough for you to put yourself in this position.”
“What position is that?” Steve tilted his head.
“The position of meeting my parents.” Will held his breath.
“It doesn’t have to be a position at all. We both know the truth, and we can let this situation mean as much or as little as we let it. Others can think whatever they want as far as I’m concerned.” Steve shrugged. “And anyway, if nothing else, I owe you protection as part of the pact of gay men against recalcitrant and resistant mothers.”
“The what?” Will suppressed a chuckle. He loved Steve’s sense of humor. “There is no such thing.”
“Frankly, I think there should be.” Steve tilted his chin in a gesture of stubbornness.
It told Will exactly how flexible his new lover was going to be about this. Not. Even his mother didn’t stand a chance against Steve’s determination, even less so since Steve’s opinion actually mattered to Will. His mother’s outdated views had been bugging him for years, and maybe it was time to truly stand up to her. He’d never been certain where his father was in all this, but Will had to assume he agreed with her; he’d never once spoken up or said something different.
Will nodded slowly as he withdrew his hand from the mouthpiece, and a radiant smile spread across Steve’s face.
“Mother? I’m back.” Will took a final breath, then plunged right in. “There won’t be a need for you to provide a date for me on Sunday. I’ll be bringing my own.”
“That’s wonderful news.” His mother sounded way too excited for Will’s peace of mind. “I’m so relieved you finally met a nice woman. I look forward to—”
“Mother!” Will was about to lose his shit. “Haven’t you listened to a single word I’ve said over the years? What I repeated not five minutes ago?”
“What?” His mother sounded surprised and wounded.
“I’ll say it again, one more time for the record.” Will focused on regulating his breathing. “I am gay, Mother. G–A–Y. It means I date men, and the person who will accompany me to Sunday lunch is male.”
“A man?” His mother sounded as shocked as if he’d told her this for the first time just then.
